To Venture the Cold

Bare trees that creak in the frigid wind

Surviving the ice, only the thick-skinned.

Silence in the deafening night,

Creatures curled up together and tight.

Pillowy snow illuminates the ground

A songbird's warble, where can it be found?

An evergreen's odor absent and frozen

Suitable burrows already chosen.

Sustenance scarce in barren lands

No more a root planted by hands.

Desolate forests that groan in the air

Wild things huddled- a group and a pair.
